Nelson’s first NHL player, Mike Laughton began his pro career with the WHL’s Victoria Maple Leafs in 1966 after a few seasons with the WIHL Nelson Maple Leafs. The Toronto Maple Leaf prospect was picked up in the expansion draft by the Oakland Seals before the 1967-68 season. Laughton split that first season playing with the Seals and the WHL Vancouver Canucks. He went on to play 189 games in the NHL scoring 39 goals and 48 assists. Laughton captained the 1972 Calder Cup champion Nova Scotia Voyageurs (AHL), played three seasons in the WHA with the New York Raiders/New Jersey Knights and San Diego Mariners and finished his playing career in 1978 with the Nelson Maple Leafs.
